The Role
As a Family Defender, you will represent parents in three key areas: (1) family policing investigations and CACI administrative hearings, (2) juvenile court proceedings, and (3) federal civil rights litigation under 42 U.S.C. § 1983. You will handle cases in both juvenile and federal court, conduct hearings and bench trials, and engage in strategic litigation to protect family integrity and advance the goals of the families we serve. This is a client-centered role that demands courtroom experience, cultural humility, and a deep commitment to justice for families impacted by the family policing system.
Key Responsibilities
Collaborative Legal Advocacy:
-
Work closely with a multidisciplinary defense team—including paralegals, legal doulas, investigators, and expert witnesses—to provide holistic, high-quality legal defense to parents and caregivers. Our goal is to protect family integrity and advance client-identified objectives, such as avoiding court involvement, keeping children out of the foster system, minimizing the length of system entanglement, and connecting families to concrete resources when appropriate.
Direct Legal Representation:
-
Represent parents at all stages of involvement with the family policing system, including during:
-
CPS investigations and Child Abuse Central Index (CACI) administrative hearings;
-
Juvenile dependency proceedings in family policing (juvenile) court; and
-
Federal civil rights litigation brought under 42 U.S.C. § 1983.
-
Strategic Litigation and Case Planning:
-
Develop and execute effective case strategies that are legally sound and aligned with client goals. Prepare and submit persuasive written advocacy, conduct evidentiary hearings and bench trials, and participate in strategic litigation aimed at challenging unlawful government conduct.

Help disrupt harmful narratives about families—especially those rooted in bias, poverty, or race—through strategic storytelling and advocacy. This may include the use of declarations, media, or other client-approved platforms that elevate the dignity and strength of families navigating unjust systems.
Community Legal Education and Systems Accountability:
-
Engage in public education efforts, including delivering Know Your Rights trainings to parents and caregivers, and facilitating workshops for mandated reporters—such as teachers, doctors, and service providers—on how to act as “mandated supporters” instead of funneling families into harmful systems.
